Roland Dwayne Matteson, 76, passed peacefully January 1, 2022, in Phoenix, Arizona. Roland was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, on December 18, 1945. His parents moved to Arizona when he was a year old. He lived his entire life in Arizona except for his years in the Navy.
During Vietnam he enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Pocono.
Roland was a Paid Up for Life member of The American Legion. He belonged to Dwight Eisenhower Post 72 in Phoenix, Arizona. Roland was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion. He belonged to Christopher J Lapka Squadron 105 also in Phoenix, Arizona. He served all offices of the Sons of The American Legion. He proudly served the Sons of the American Legion as National Commander 1993-94; SAL -Western Division National Vice Commander 1989-1990; SAL – State Commander 1986-1988.
Roland was very proud of his Scottish Heritage. He belonged to Clan Matheson and traveled many miles attending Clan Meetings and gatherings.
Roland is survived by Barbara, his wife of 54 years, their son Roland Michael and wife Alisha. Granddaughter Jessica and husband Ryan McComb, great-grandchildren Brent and Blakely. Grandson David Matteson and wife Holly. Two sisters Connie Rogers and husband Glenn, sister Jan Luckey, numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roland M Matteson and Eileen Matteson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, his Special Project when he was National Commander. Donations may also made to American Legion Department of Arizona Boys State Program of which he was on staff for many years.
Celebration of Life will be held at American Legion Post 105 at their new home address 1818 W Bell Rd Suite 100, Phoenix Arizona, on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at 2:00pm. His ashes will be inurned at the Prescott National Cemetery on Monday, February 7, 2022, at 11:00am.
