A few days ago, just before our National Convention, a veteran, Vice Principal Ramona Ramirez of Isaac Middle School in Phoenix, decided to do something about the flagpole that had been vandalized months ago. The damage had rendered the school unable to fly our national and state colors. Seeking a solution, she decided to call The American Legion and was connected with ALA member Stephanie McMullen, who got her in touch with Jaclyn Kulfan (District 12 Commander, who promptly recruited Ramona and her husband into The Legion). Jaclyn then called me to see if we might be able to do something to fix the problem. I was immediately able to reach out to Ramona and the planning began.
Brief History: Back in April, 2025, someone apparently vandalized the school’s flagpole. With scarce funding at the school available, the school was unable to make repairs. I immediately approved discretionary funds to make the repairs, acquire the flags, and get them flying again as soon as possible. I called Commander Barry Laughery, District 11 (as the school is in his district) and he has worked to take our initial plans and coordinate the final program.
The Plan: At 0900 on Wednesday, September 3rd, at the school (3402 W McDowell Rd., PHX, 85009), local first responders from the Phoenix Fire Department, Firehouse 22 will station their ladder truck so we can restring and repair the halyard on the 30 foot pole. Joshua Lyons, District Director for Congressman Abe Hamadeh, who was present for the evacuation of the Afghanistan Embassy, and who brought out the embassy flags, will have one to present to the color guard. The color guard is one of The Legion supported JROTC units of Carly Hayden High School will assist with raising the flag. The middle school’s band will be present to play the national anthem and we’ll all be able to render appropriate honors to our national and state colors. A few other special events may happen, but they are still under discussion for clearances.
I cordially invite Legionnaires across the state, especially from Districts 11 and 12, to see just what we do when our community calls, and when we engage to demonstrate the strength of the Pillars of our great organization. Yes, this is what “Veterans Strengthening America” is all about. If you are able to attend, wear your Post Polo and Legion cover.
I love this job!
