BUCKEYE, AZ – What began as routine planning for a September Poker Run turned into a poignant act of community service by the Wayne V. McMartin American Legion Riders Chapter 91.
Back in July, the chapter’s ride committee began organizing the event, assigning Recon Rider Brad “Bandit” Toth to scout the route. His task: visit each stop, time the ride, coordinate with business owners and post commanders, and report back with logistics to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
However, the original breakfast stop unexpectedly closed, prompting Toth to search for an alternative. He discovered The Heritage, a quaint eatery in Old Town Buckeye adjacent to a small memorial park honoring fallen military members and first responders from the area.
Moved by the setting, the committee arranged for a brief ceremony at the park before breakfast.
Plans included remarks from Area B Vice Commander Gerald “Voodoo” Valle a member of ALR 91, a prayer by Chapter Chaplain Lou “Wired Wrong” Carful, and a moment of silence.
During the final recon ride in early September, Unit 91 Auxiliary member and ALR Chapter Director Kathleen “Kat-Rawr” Valle noticed the tattered American flag flying over the memorial.
“Oh no, this will not do, that flag needs to be replaced,” she said. Her words sparked immediate action.
One of The Heritage owners contacted the Buckeye Chamber of Commerce, and the Area B Vice Commander got District 11 Commander Barry Laughery to join the efforts to coordinate a flag replacement ceremony.
On the day of the event, ALR chapters from across the region, and Area B AZALR Vice Chairman JD Bristor and District 12 ALR Representative Randy Dodson gathered to witness the flag retirement. The worn flag was respectfully handed to Mr. Samuel Medina of the Chamber of Commerce, who pledged to deliver it to a local scout troop for a formal retirement ceremony.
