Post 7’s Firebirds from Tucson High School are now one game away from the Department Baseball Championship. That’s on the heels of their victory in Game 1 of the three-game championship series against the Desert View Cactus Cats. The Firebirds won that first game 7-3 Tuesday night. Game 2, and Game 3 if necessary, are tonight (Wednesday) at Vista Grand High School in Casa Grande. Game(s) begin at 6:00 PM.
Interestingly, the Firebirds were the Area A (Tucson) regular season champions with an 11-1 record. The Cactus Cats finished second during the regular season, posting a 10-1-1 mark. Both teams edged out victories during the Department Baseball Tournament a week ago. The Firebirds defeated the Post 73 Crush by winning games one and three of their best-of-three series. The Cactus Cats also survived, defeating the Lofton Panthers two games to one in their best-of-three event.
After the Department Championship is concluded, the winner will represent Arizona in the American Legion Western Regional tournament, Aug. 3 to 7 in Fairfield, CA.
