My Fellow Legionnaires,
Yesterday I was apprised about a post that is planning a ride in support of Charlie Kirk at the funeral services in Glendale. Last week, I was informed of others who were asking about the same.
While I am greatly discouraged at the violent choices being made and carried out by some to accomplish their objectives, I must remind our organization that we were chartered as a non-partisan, non-political entity, embracing a non-denominational approach to see to the needs of our members and families.
As such, it is imperative to make sure that all our members know that while they can provide support according to their personal beliefs within the confines of the law, our national, department, and local constitutions and bylaws, do not allow us to place ourselves in situations that could be interpreted as support/endorsement for a political party, candidate, or movement.
As indicated, members are clearly afforded the rights to show their concern and support for the Kirk family, but members cannot go in uniform or other clothing that may be identified as advocacy from The American Legion or the Department of Arizona.
I understand the faith-based considerations, but with all aspects reviewed, this situation is much more than that. Even if only a simple show of support is rendered, we could still, even harmlessly, become associated with partisan politics and resultant scrutiny. The news media have already announced that protesters are planning to be present, and history has shown a propensity for confrontations. We cannot risk our charter and non-profit/charitable status to accomplish our vision and mission, especially through unintended consequences.
Please do your best to disseminate this guidance to all members in your posts and family programs.
Therefore, members are free to exercise their conscience; however, the wearing of any American Legion-associated items is not permitted when attending this or similar events..
Thank you.
