Commander’s News Brief – FRIDAY https://youtu.be/jWymTrTQ7hQ
Greetings everyone,
(Summary) Women Veterans Day (observed on June 12) honors the historic signing of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which allowed women to serve as permanent members of the U.S. military. It is a time to recognize the nearly 2 million women who have broken barriers and served our country.
My fellow Legionnaires, not only is it RED SHIRT FRIDAY, but
Today—June 12th—marks a defining moment in our nation’s military history. On this exact date in 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, finally allowing women to serve as permanent, regular members of the United States Armed Forces.
But the legacy of our women veterans didn’t begin in 1948, and it certainly doesn’t end there. From the women who disguised themselves as soldiers during the Revolutionary War, to the nurses, codebreakers, and pilots of the 20th century, women have always stepped up to protect this country.
Throughout our history, women have answered the call even when the odds were stacked against them. They’ve served with distinction across the globe, taking on every role imaginable in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and now the Space force.
But being a woman in the military has often meant facing two battles simultaneously: the fight to defend our nation overseas, and the fight for equality and respect right here at home….Despite the obstacles, these women pushed forward. They shattered glass ceilings, proved that strength and leadership know no gender, and built a legacy that continues to shape our military.
Today, women make up a vital and rapidly growing portion of our total veteran population. They are our neighbors, our colleagues, and our community leaders.
Honoring our women veterans means more than just a “thank you for your service.” It means ensuring they receive the same care, the same support, and the same respect that they fought so hard to secure for others.
To our women veterans here in Arizona, Thank you. Thank you for your resilience, your sacrifice, and your trailblazing spirit. You have laid a foundation that makes our next generation of servicewomen stand taller, prouder, and stronger.
We honor your service today—and every day—by ensuring your stories are shared and your contributions are never forgotten. I look forward to listening to and sharing some of those stories this evening at a special commemoration at Post 27 tonight at 1800. See you there.
Thank you.
