I just saw that scammers of gift cards are now somehow placing gift cards in stores that have a barcode sticker that is a fraud that transfers funds to them.
I don’t see how they can get such a sticker onto the card without disturbing the cardboard case that the card is typically within.
The safest cards are in a fully sealed wrapper that the cashier needs to tear to expose the barcode window for activation and funding.
When you buy, inspect the back of the card package and you should not be able to look into the package to see the barcode. If the “window” is already torn open, scammers have already set up that card for themselves and a cashier should alert you not to use that card.
Just in case, you should check it yourself.
Cards that don’t come in packages, should be smooth backed, not containing a sticker of any kind for its barcode.
Be cautious out there! And enjoy wonderful holidays with those whom you love.
Thank you for your pause to consider comfort for those who are separated from their loved ones for any reason and especially for those who are on duty in harms way around the world.
