Phoenix, AZ – July 2, 2025 – Following a recent convention, Gary A. Vaughan has been elected as the Department Commander for The American Legion, Department of Arizona, for the 2025-26 term. In a letter addressed to fellow Legionnaires of Arizona, Commander Vaughan expressed gratitude for the “overwhelming support” that led to his election.
Vaughan acknowledged Brian Jacks, his opponent in the election, stating they are friends and have pledged to work together to bring about needed changes.
Looking ahead, Commander Vaughan outlined his immediate priorities, which include finalizing committee chair positions. He indicated there will be “several changes in committee leadership”. The new chairs will collaborate to select individuals for committees to address the “Pillars of The American Legion”.
Commander Vaughan emphasized his commitment to utilizing the “extraordinary talents” of individuals he encountered during his campaign travels who have been “seriously underutilized”. He stated his intention to “strive to make the changes you have powerfully requested through your vote and provide new opportunities for those who wish to engage”.
Quoting the adage, “Many hands make light work,” Vaughan encouraged broad participation, noting, “I do not expect a few to monopolize the many positions”. He urged members to “step up to take on a little that collectively will accomplish a lot”.
Commander Vaughan invited any Legionnaires interested in participating to contact him by phone, text, or email. The Department is establishing an official email account for him at commander@azlegion.org. He also provided a private email address: commander.gavaughan.talaz@gmail.com. His phone and text numbers can be found in the current directory under the Americanism, Scouting, and Emergency Response Committees. He requested that callers and texters include their name and post.
Commander Vaughan concluded by reiterating his thanks for the “formidable support” and pledged to “maintain your trust and show my appreciation as we move forward with the best interests of Arizona Legionnaires in mind”.
