On September 15th, 2024, Life Scout Donald Thomas Salch, of Troop 126 sponsored by Post 94 in Sun City West, having just turned 16, went out for a short drive to enjoy his newfound freedom. Suddenly, he witnessed a serious automobile accident. “Tommy” sprang into action, took charge of the scene, and, with quick thinking, performed a life-saving rescue of an elderly motorist. He instructed another witness to call 911 while he crawled into the disabled vehicle to pull the trapped victim out. With another witness, he began rendering first aid to the injured gentleman until first responders arrived to take over the scene. His selfless act, performed under immense pressure, exemplified the highest standards of heroism for a young man, particularly reflecting his training in the Scouting organization.
Commander Vaughan, with nearly 50 years in Scouting himself, serving on the Grand Canyon Council’s Executive Board, having served with Tommy at Camp Geronimo, AZ, was present for the awards. Other Legionnaires: Jack Coyle, Commander of sponsoring Post 94, was accompanied by John and Karen Meury of Post 145, who conducted the evening ceremony. Tommy was awarded the Scouting Heroism Award and a special Certificate of Recognition, and a coin from The American Legion.
Speaking of the moment, Tommy said that his training in Scouting, first aid, and emergency preparedness had prepared him to face unexpected challenges. He stated that he did not have to think much about all the possible procedures and techniques; he said they had become second nature to him through his experiences in Scouting.
The American Legion has sponsored Scouting since its inception in 1919. The mission of Scouting is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices throughout their lives by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, promoting character development, responsible citizenship, and personal fitness. Tommy, as taught by his parents and trained by Scouting leaders, many of whom are engaged Legionnaires, is a hero to us all, especially the elderly gentleman whose life was spared by his quick and exacting actions.
As Commander, I want to thank Commander Coyle and his Charter Organization Representative, Rodney Martinson of Post 94, for their efforts to train our youth, our leaders for tomorrow. Notably, Post 94 sponsors six different Scouting units. Where you find The Legion, you will find heroes.
